Tour Description

San Sebastian Birding Excursion November Through April

Nature meets culture on this one of a kind San Sebastian Birding & Cultural tour. Nestled in pine forests high into the Sierra Madre Mountains you will find one of Mexico's Pueblos Magicos, San Sebastian del Oeste, a mining town seemingly lost in time. Despite its boom of Mexico's mining culture in its heyday, San Sebastian del Oeste probably has more birds in the treetops now than the entire community has residents. Our expert birding guides love to share their knowledge of both the birds of San Sebastian, and the folklore that makes San Sebastian such a charming destination and birders paradise.

Our San Sebastian bird watching tour begins in the lowlands which is San Sebastian’s colonial center, also nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its well preserved history. In fact, walking into San Sebastian, you may get the eerie feeling you have traveled back in time as it has literally stood still for the past 100 years. But look up to the giant oak trees and you will see that the forest is alive and well with several endemic and migratory birds. In the lowlands surrounding San Sebastian del Oeste some of the more popular bird species that you may spot are:

  • Acorn Woodpeckers
  • Mexican Jays
  • Red Warblers
  • Painted Redstarts
  • Pygmy Owls
  • Chestnut Sided Vireos
  • Blue Mockingbirds
  • Grey Collared Becards
  • Magpie Jays
  • ... and many more.
Next our San Sebastian birding trip takes us into the pine forest trails leading toward "La Bufa". With walking sticks in hand, the expert field guides listen for the bird songs, identify them and explain the different bird species to you. Our birding guides are experts at identification and will do their best to help close up photos of your favorite Mexico birds. Up in the pine forest we will keep our eyes peeled for:

  • Long-tail Wood Partridges
  • Dusky-capped Flycatchers
  • Spotted Wrens
  • Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush
  • Brown Baked Solitaires
  • Slate-throated Redstarts
  • Mountain Trogons
  • ...to name a few.
One of the best cultural heritage sites of Mexico surrounded by some of the best birding in Mexico lead by the best birding guides in Mexico pretty much means this Birding San Sebastian tour will be an unforgettable experience on your Puerto Vallarta vacation.

Insider Tip: This really is the best of both nature and culture in one day, unique to any other tour offered in Puerto Vallarta. San Sebastian del Oeste is a must see, but pack layers as it gets CHILLY up at the high altitudes. Between the chill and the architecture of this colonial mining village you may forget that you are vacationing in a tropical beach destination.
